Geophysical data are usually separated into Seismic and Non-Seismic data. Seismic is, without any doubt, the main method used in the oil and gas industry. But Non-Seismic data (gravity, magnetics, electrical, electromagnetics, spectral, etc.) is and the main source of information in shallow subsurface applications (engineering, mapping pollution, archaeology, etc.) and used at the early reconnaissance of hydrocarbon plays and in mapping prospects below salt or volcanic rocks. However, seismic has its limitations and therefore also non-seismic methods are used successfully as complementary tools in subsurface evaluation. In combination with seismic data, they can significantly reduce the uncertainty of subsurface models as they measure different physical properties of the subsurface. Controlled Source EM for example responds to reservoir resistivity and can thus be used to differentiate between hydrocarbon- and brine-filled reservoirs.
The course consists of studying literature, following videos and presentations, making many practical exercises in which the theory is applied and using quizzes to re-enforce the learning. Moodle, a course management system will be used, facilitating interactions.
This course is a blended course. It is lead remotely by the instructor that has daily direct interactions with the trainees for several hours. Trainees are self-learning for the rest of the day by doing exercises and going through the course material.
The course consists of presentations, videos, and exercises. The presentations, also made available in pdf, are animated power point shows. The videos are either related to the exercises or general, some related to professional societies. In the exercises the methods discussed in the presentations are applied using computer programs. The solutions are discussed. Also, the course contains quizzes which are meant to reinforce the learning. Each quiz consists of multiple-choice questions.

Those involved in either designing or supervising acquisition and processing of non-seismic data, with emphasis on the appropriateness in view of the (exploration and production) objectives. The course is targeted at asset geologists and geophysicists, non-seismic acquisition and processing experts.
In the course the main topics are gravity and magnetics (potential field methods) and electrical and electromagnetic methods. On land GPR plays an important role in investigating the shallow subsurface, offshore Controlled Source EM (CSEM) is used to determine whether a reservoir is filled with hydrocarbons, Magneto-Telluric methods determine whether reservoir is present below salt or volcanic rocks. To combine the information in an optimal way, use is made of joint inversion. In addition to those physics-based methods, the possibilities that Machine Learning offers is discussed. Also, whether to acquire additional data or apply new processing to older datasets is evaluated using the Value of Information (VOI) statistical approach.
An understanding of the role of Potential, Electrical and Electromagnetic data in the context of exploration and production of hydrocarbons and in relation to mitigating pollution or investigating archaeological sites. A good foundation in geology and geophysics is a benefit.
